- The type of variety (Black Cedar 'Nigra', Brandon (Fastigiata), Smaragd 'Emerald'), each with its own characteristics of growth, width and height.
- The size and size of the plants chosen (height at the time of purchase), and whether they are available in pots or not (cedars grown in pots offer better recovery and faster growth than those grown in the field).
- The number of cedars needed, depending on the desired hedge length and recommended spacing (about 2 feet between each plant for standard varieties).
- The service requested: simple purchase of the plants, complete planting, delivery, initial fertilization, uprooting of an existing hedge, etc. All of these services add to the cost.
Here is the recommended cedar hedge maintenance plan:
- Watering: from planting, provide adequate watering; possible inclusion of a drip irrigation system for hedges, to ensure a regular supply of water.
- Fertilization: PURcèdres offers a fertilization service adapted to the season, to support the growth of young plants as well as the maintenance of mature hedges.
- Maintenance pruning: annual pruning is recommended, especially after the hedge has reached the desired size, to control height and width, stimulate the density of the foliage, and prevent it from becoming bald. PURcèdres offers a professional quality hedge trimming service.
- Protocol / Support: After purchase or installation, PURcèdres provides a maintenance protocol and remains available for support or to answer questions.
At PURCèdres, two main options are offered:
- Cedar Grown in Containers: Available up to about 6 to 7 feet tall, with a price posted online depending on the size chosen. This option is more affordable and allows for flexible planting (by yourself or by our team). The young plants grow back quickly, but require a few years of maintenance before obtaining a completely opaque hedge.
- Cedars in the field : Offered from about 7 feet, these larger trees offer immediate privacy, but are only available with our installation service. The price is not displayed on the site, as it includes a personalized evaluation, specialized transportation, and professional planting.
In summary, potted cedars are more economical and flexible for planting, while field cedars represent a higher investment but guarantee a mature hedge from the start.

Purcèdres offers three varieties of cedars grown in Quebec, each adapted to specific needs:
- Black Cedar 'Nigra' (Thuja occidentalis 'Nigra'): Dense dark green foliage, ideal for creating a privacy hedge. Mature height about 16 to 20 feet, width 5 to 6 feet.
- Brandon Cedar (Fastigiata) (Fastigiata / Thuja occidentalis 'Brandon'): Narrow columnar habit, perfect for small spaces or modern hedges. Can grow to about 20 feet in height and only 3 feet in width.
- Smaragd Cedar 'Emerald' (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'): Very regular conical shape and bright emerald green colour, offering a refined decorative touch. Height around 16 feet, width about 3 feet.
Each of these varieties is available as container-grown plants, which come with installation manuals and irrigation or fertilization options to promote quick recovery and even growth. Check out our cedar sale page for more information.
- The ideal pruning period is between the end of April and the end of October, when growth has begun, but not yet finished, which allows good healing and maintenance of density.
- Popular moments:
• End of June: after the main annual shoot, to have a well-formed hedge for the summer.
• End of season (from August): to reduce damage caused by snow and winter weather. - It is not recommended to prune outside this window: neither in winter (risk of frost, poorly healed wounds), nor at the very beginning of spring before active growth resumes.
