Created in 1971 from the merger of 14 municipalities, Mirabel is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the Lower Laurentians, with more than 67,000 inhabitants spread over a territory of 486 km² — one of the largest municipal territories in Quebec. Its strategic position between Highway 15 and Route 117, about 40 km north of Montreal, makes it a residential destination of choice for families looking for space, nature and a low tax rate, while remaining connected to the city.
What distinguishes Mirabel from other cities on the North Shore is the generosity of its land. Unlike denser suburbs like Blainville or Brossard, Mirabel's properties are often on large lots, with well-sized front and back yards — exactly the type of space where a cedar hedge transforms the living environment. Mirabel's lots are generally more spacious than in other suburbs of the North Shore — hedge projects are often large-scale, sometimes 80 to 100 feet or more, to delineate large properties or create well-defined areas of privacy.
PURcèdres, specializing only in cedar hedges for more than 10 years in the greater Montreal area, installs more than 10,000 cedars each year and has served more than 1,000 customers since its beginnings. With a rating of 4.9/5 on Google (220+ verified reviews), our team accompanies Mirabel owners from variety selection to complete installation. Cedar Hedge Installation in Mirabel
Soil characteristics in Mirabel
The Mirabel territory has a wide variety of soil types depending on the sector, reflecting its immense surface area. In lower areas close to streams and agricultural areas, clay and loamy soils are common. In recent residential areas such as the Domaine-Vert, the land was often levelled and backfilled during construction, creating conditions that varied from one lot to another. In older areas such as Saint-Janvier and Saint-Augustin, the soils are generally more stable and well established. PURcèdres adapts soil preparation to the conditions encountered on your land to maximize the recovery of your plants.
Saint-Janvier — the residential heart of Mirabel
Saint-Janvier is the densest and most developed neighbourhood in Mirabel — often referred to as the city's "downtown." Located north of Blainville, along Route 117, it brings together most of the services, shops, schools and sports facilities. Its quiet and well-established residential streets, mostly made up of single-family homes, generate a high demand for cedar hedges. This is the area where we find the largest number of properties with medium-sized lots, perfect for hedges of 40 to 80 feet.
Domaine-Vert North and South — families and new constructions
The Domaine-Vert sectors, located near Highway 15 on the border of Boisbriand and Saint-Jérôme, represent Mirabel's modern residential expansion. These relatively new neighbourhoods are mainly home to young families in new single-family homes on generous lots. These areas have the highest demand for hedges — new owners want to quickly create a private living space in yards that are directly adjacent to those of the neighbors. Nigra, with its fast growth, is the most in-demand variety here.
Saint-Augustin — spacious and expanding lots
Saint-Augustin is one of the five expanding geographic sectors identified by the City of Mirabel. It offers properties on plots that are generally larger than in the denser areas, with a still semi-rural character. It is in this type of area that long hedges are most common — 100 feet or more — to delimit large areas or create outdoor living areas out of sight.
Saint-Canut — booming area
Saint-Canut, located in the northeastern part of Mirabel, is experiencing significant residential development while preserving its distinct identity. There are new constructions on large lots, with a clientele that appreciates both space and proximity to nature. The cedar hedges fit very naturally into a setting where green dominates.
Mirabel-en-Haut and village areas
Older village areas such as Mirabel-en-Haut have a distinct heritage character, with long-established properties and well-treed grounds. Homeowners in these areas are often looking to replace aging hedges or supplement existing landscaping with quality cedars.

A local advantage: free collection of cedar trimmings
Good news for the following years: once your hedge is established and ready for its first annual pruning, the City of Mirabel offers a free cedar hedge trim recovery service at home. Schedule a collection via the City's website — pickup is done directly at your home. The scraps are then recycled into natural mulch and essential oil rather than sent to landfill.

FAQ — Cedar Hedges in Mirabel
No — according to the official sheet of the City of Mirabel (section 6.5.3 of zoning by-law U-2300, version of November 26, 2024), no permit is required to plant a residential hedge in Mirabel. All you have to do is respect the minimum distances set out in the by-law: 0.6 metres from the street right-of-way and 1.5 metres from a fire hydrant. Source: mirabel.ca
A minimum distance of 0.6 metres must be respected between your hedge and any public road right-of-way (street or sidewalk). A distance of 1.5 metres is also required from any fire hydrant.
For the large hedges typical of Mirabel (80 to 100+ feet), the Nigra is the most popular for its fast growth and dense screen. In more established areas such as Saint-Janvier, the Smaragd offers a refined decorative look with less maintenance. Our expert can advise you during the free virtual consultation.
Yes — the City of Mirabel indicates that different standards may apply in the Mirabel-en-Haut sector, which is a heritage village sector. If your property is in this area, we recommend contacting the Planning and Development Department at 450-475-2007 before planting.
With well-planted cedars with rooting fertilizer and adequate irrigation, count 3 to 5 years for a complete opaque screen. Our optional maintenance program — training pruning + fertilizing in May, fertilizing in June — can reduce this time to 2 to 3 years. For an immediate result, PURcèdres offers cedars grown in the field from 7 feet.
