CEDAR PLANTING IN TERREBONNE

SUBMISSION

Terrebonne is now the largest city on the northern shore of Montreal, with a population of more than 125,000 spread over three major sectors — Terrebonne, Lachenaie and La Plaine. Resulting from a municipal merger in 2001, the city has had one of the most sustained residential growth in the metropolitan area for more than twenty years. The Urbanova, Domaine du Parc and La Croisée urbaine neighbourhoods, among others, have generated thousands of new single-family and semi-detached properties, attracting families every year looking to enjoy a spacious living environment just a few kilometres from Montreal.

In this context of intense residential development, privacy in the backyard quickly became a priority for Terrebonne homeowners. Whether it's in the new streets of Lachenaie, where homes are built side by side on lots of about 5,000 to 7,000 square feet, or in the more established areas of Old Terrebonne, where lots are often narrower, the need to create a natural green screen between properties is omnipresent. Cedar — commonly known as cedar in Quebec — is the solution of choice: it forms a dense, green natural windbreak twelve months a year, without the cold appearance of a wood or metal fence.

It is precisely this need that PURcèdres has been supporting for more than 10 years in the greater Montreal area. As a producer of cedar grown in Quebec, we control the quality of our plants from the nursery to the installation in your home — without intermediaries. With more than 10,000 cedars installed each year, more than 1,000 satisfied customers since our beginnings and a rating of 4.9/5 on Google (220+ reviews), our team has more than 10 years of experience in the region. Are you planning a natural hedge in Terrebonne? Request your free quote now — it's non-binding and you get a quick response.

The planting season runs from May to October, which gives you a nice window to plan your project. Whether you live in a new development in Lachenaie, an established area in Old Terrebonne or a large lot in La Plaine, our team intervenes throughout the territory to create your cedar hedge in the best conditions.

Cedar hedge installation in Terrebonne

Soil and local environmental characteristics

The Terrebonne territory has varied soil conditions depending on the sector. In the areas near the Mille-Îles River, which delimits the south of the city, and the Mascouche River, which runs through its centre, the soils tend to be more clayey and compact, with sometimes limited drainage. These conditions can slow down the recovery of cedars if planting is not done with the right amendments. In more northern areas such as La Plaine, soils are generally better drained but sandier and nutrient-poor, making soil enrichment at planting all the more important to ensure the long-term vitality of the plants.

Terrebonne's neighbourhoods and their development realities

🌲Terrebonne Sector — Old Terrebonne and Established Neighbourhoods

The historic sector borders the Rivière des Mille-Îles and includes an older residential fabric, composed mainly of bungalows and two-storey houses built between the 1960s and 1990s. The land is often narrower than elsewhere, which leads many owners to opt for varieties with a columnar habit — such as the Brandon — in order to create an effective natural hedge without encroaching on the space of the yard. The heritage character of the area, with its tree-lined streets and the presence of Île-des-Moulins, also attracts owners who are attached to the aesthetics of their landscaping.

🌲Lachenaie Sector — Active Developments and New Construction

Lachenaie is the fastest-growing area in Terrebonne. New neighbourhoods are added every year — Urbanova, Domaine du Parc, the Université de Montréal campus and the Centre hospitalier Pierre-Le Gardeur — generating hundreds of new single-family and semi-detached properties. In these recent developments where homes are built on lots close together, the demand for cedar hedges is particularly strong: new homeowners want to quickly regain a sense of privacy in their yard, without waiting for natural vegetation to settle.

🌲La Plaine Sector — Large lots and semi-rural character

The Plaine offers a more spacious character, with generally larger plots of land than in the other two sectors. There is a mix of single-family homes established on large lots and more recent developments. Owners in La Plaine often look for tall hedges to delimit long edges of land, create well-defined outdoor living areas or protect themselves from the winds coming from the north. This sector, which is more in contact with the agricultural areas and woods of Lanaudière, is also the one where certain environmental factors deserve special attention.

Advantages of a cedar hedge in Terrebonne

PRIVACY IN
THE COURT

A cedar hedge forms an opaque and permanent plant screen, much superior to a wooden fence that yellows and deforms over time. In the dense neighbourhoods of Lachenaie as well as in the narrower streets of Old Terrebonne, she gives the backyard its private character, out of sight.

WINDBREAKS
NATURAL

The suburban areas of Terrebonne, particularly in La Plaine and in the new developments in Lachenaie, are often exposed to northern winds. A well-established cedar hedge acts as an effective natural windbreak, making outdoor spaces much more pleasant and reducing heat loss in winter.

IMPROVED
LANDSCAPING

A dense and well-maintained natural hedge enhances the appearance of a property and contributes to its market value. In areas like Lachenaie, where homes often look the same, a mature and well-groomed hedge becomes a popular distinguishing feature.

ALTERNATIVE TO
FENCING

The cedar hedge generally does not require a permit in Terrebonne for standard residential configurations. It offers a natural and warm image, much more accepted in new family quarters than metal or treated wood.

A local advantage: free scrap collection

Good news for the following years: once your hedge is established and ready for its first annual pruning, the City of Terrebonne offers a free home cedar trim recovery service, available from May 1 to October 31. Simply group the scraps at the curb after pruning and schedule a collection — pickup is within 48 business hours. A practical and eco-responsible initiative that simplifies the maintenance of your hedge for years to come.

NIGRA CEDAR
(THUJA OCCIDENTALIS 'NIGRA')

The most popular variety in Terrebonne for privacy hedges. It can grow to 16 to 20 feet tall at maturity.

BRANDON CEDAR
(FASTIGIATA)

Its very narrow columnar habit — up to 20 feet high and only 3 feet wide — makes it the perfect variety for the narrow lots of the historic Terrebonne sector or for homeowners who want an effective plant screen without taking up too much space in the yard.

SMARAGD CEDAR
(EMERALD)

Its very regular conical shape and characteristic emerald green colour make it the preferred variety when the decorative aspect is as important as the functionality. Its slower growth is suitable for homeowners who prefer to minimize long-term maintenance.

Terrebonne By-laws

Before planting your cedar hedge, here are the main rules to know according to the City of Terrebonne's regulations.

Street Right-of-Way
It is forbidden to encroach on the street right-of-way. Your hedge must be planted within the boundaries of your private property.

Distance from neighbours
The distance from the neighbour's land is governed by the Civil Code of Québec. For a hedge intended to exceed 2 metres in height, it is generally advisable to plant it at least 50 cm from the lot line.

Visibility triangle on street corners
If your property is located on a street corner, a visibility triangle must be respected at the intersection. Any hedge, tree or landscaping located within this triangle must remain below 1 metre in height so as not to impede the visibility of motorists.

Urbanova Sector
For properties located in the Urbanova sector, specific rules may apply. Consult the City's Citizens' Office for your situation.

Riparian areas
If your land borders the Mille-Îles River, the Mascouche River or a wetland, a certificate of authorization may be required before planting.

FAQ — Cedar hedges in Terrebonne

For a dense and long-lasting plant screen, PURcedars recommends a 24-inch (about 60 cm.) center-to-center spacing for container-grown cedars. Tighter spacing may seem to yield faster results, but it does harm plant health in the long term by creating too much root competition. With the right spacing and a proper fertilization program, you will have an opaque natural hedge in 3 to 5 years.

For a standard residential hedge, no permit is generally required in Terrebonne. However, you must respect the zoning rules: do not encroach on the street right-of-way and respect the visibility triangle if your property is on a street corner. If your property is in the Urbanova sector or along a watercourse, additional authorizations may be required. Consult the Citizens' Office to confirm: terrebonne.ca/reglements-permis/cloture-haie-muret/

The City of Terrebonne does not set a general maximum height for residential hedges. The main restriction concerns the visibility triangle at the corner of the street: any plant element located inside this triangle must remain below 1 metre in height. Outside the visibility triangle, the height is not limited by regulation, as long as the hedge remains inside your property.

The choice depends on your land and your priorities. For a fast and dense plant screen, the Nigra is the most popular in Terrebonne. For narrow terrain — common in Old Terrebonne — the Brandon with its columnar port is often more suitable. For neat landscaping with less maintenance, the Smaragd is a beautiful decorative option. Our team can advise you on the quote according to your area and the configuration of your land.

With cedars grown in pots, well planted with rooting fertilizer and adequate irrigation, count 3 to 5 years for a hedge starting to form a real natural windbreak and privacy screen. For an immediate result, PURcèdres also offers cedars grown in the field from 7 feet, which offer privacy from the first season. Our optional maintenance program — training pruning + fertilizing in May, fertilizing in June — can significantly reduce this time by maximizing growth by the second year.
